Traders at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi have firmly rejected a proposal to close the market on election day, December 7, 2024, citing concerns over the impact on their livelihoods amid challenging economic conditions.
The proposal, suggested by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was raised during a meeting with market representatives at the Kumasi Culture Centre. However, in a statement released on December 3, traders expressed their disapproval, arguing that there is no justification for the closure.
Despite their objections, the traders claim that Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne has instructed the market management to enforce the closure on election day. They emphasized that shutting the market would exacerbate their financial struggles, especially since the day before, Friday, December 6, is a public holiday.
In a statement titled “Opposition to Kumasi Kejetia Market Closure on Election Day,” the Kumasi Kejetia Queen Mothers Association voiced strong opposition to the proposed closure. They urged market management to reconsider the decision, highlighting the detrimental effects it would have on their businesses.
The Queen Mothers declared their intent to resist any attempts to shut down the market, calling on management to prioritize the welfare of the traders and rescind the closure directive.
