Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has publicly expressed his bewilderment and frustration over the ongoing criminal investigation against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). In an open letter dated February 26, 2025, Ofori-Atta shared his side of the story, describing the situation as confusing and distressing.

The investigation, which initially led to a wanted notice against him, centers around various financial dealings including contracts related to the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA, the termination of the ECG-BXC contract, payments for the National Cathedral, and the controversial procurement of ambulances. The OSP has also raised concerns about the use of the Tax Refund Account. However, the wanted notice was later revoked after Mr. Ofori-Atta communicated his intention to voluntarily return for questioning.

Mr. Ofori-Atta, who had been abroad for medical reasons since January 24, 2025, expressed his shock at the dramatic turn of events. “I am as puzzled and dismayed, as I suspect you must be,” he wrote.

The former minister noted that when the OSP invited him for an in-person meeting on February 10, he was unable to attend due to his medical condition. He offered to have his lawyers provide any necessary information, but the OSP rejected that offer, insisting on his personal appearance.

Things took a more dramatic turn on February 11, when Ofori-Atta’s home was raided by armed National Security operatives. In what he described as a bizarre twist, the Special Prosecutor accused him of staging the raid, before launching a public campaign and declaring him a “fugitive from justice.”

Despite the ongoing investigation, Mr. Ofori-Atta has maintained his innocence and vowed to cooperate with the authorities, as long as the process remains fair. The drama surrounding the former finance minister has further fueled public debate and scrutiny of his actions, and the OSP has warned that failure to return as promised would result in further legal actions.

Mr. Ofori-Atta’s statement is a rare public response to the controversy, and it has added a new layer of complexity to an already high-stakes investigation. As the drama unfolds, all eyes are on how this will impact the political landscape and the future of Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
