Keta: Tidal Waves Force Families to Exhume Relatives Amid Ongoing Erosion Crisis

Residents of communities in Ketu South Municipality, including Amutinu, Salakope, and Adina, are continuing to face the devastating effects of tidal waves that have caused extensive land erosion, displacing many families and leaving them without shelter.

The tidal surges, which have worsened over time, have even reached graveyards, forcing families to exhume their deceased relatives for reburial in safer locations.

Despite repeated calls from local residents for the government to extend the Keta Sea Defense project to the affected areas, the situation remains dire. In a bid to alleviate the hardships faced by residents, the previous government pledged to build 105 houses on higher ground to relocate affected families. However, only six of these homes have been completed, with little progress on the sea defense project itself.

Gideon Tetteh, a Unit Committee member for the Amutinu-Salakope electoral area, spoke to Citi News about the growing frustration among locals. “The sea has destroyed properties here and we have had many promises from the government but nothing has happened. They promised that they would build 105 homes for us, but only six have been built. The sea defense project has also seen no progress,” he said.

Tetteh also highlighted the environmental impact of the situation, with the exhumation of bodies from affected graves causing further damage to the area. “People are taking the dead from the graves because the sea is taking over the graves and they have to relocate them. That is causing more harm than good to the environment,” he added.

As the crisis continues, residents are calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further destruction and provide a permanent solution to the growing threat of tidal waves.
