Minister for Youth, Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has criticised Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, saying he is not satisfied with the team’s performance as the country battles to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, Mr Adams said the national team has shown little consistency in the ongoing qualifiers and warned that there is still work to be done if Ghana is to make it to the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV,” he said. “We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that nobody can overtake us in our group.”

His comments come after Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by Chad on 5 September, before narrowly beating Mali 1-0 three days later. Despite the win, Mr Adams described the team’s overall performance as “unconvincing”.

He also questioned the continued leadership of Coach Addo, who returned to the role earlier this year.

“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not,” the Minister said. “There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?”

Ghana’s recent form has come under scrutiny, with many fans and pundits expressing concern about the team’s direction under Addo’s leadership. The Black Stars failed to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, increasing pressure on the technical team to deliver results in the World Cup qualifiers.
