Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has pledged that Parliament will address concerns regarding the country’s expenditure on the 2023 African Games, which were held earlier in 2024.
The previous Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, faced significant criticism over the reported costs of hosting the event. Ghana’s expenditure on the Games reportedly exceeded $245 million, with $195 million allocated for infrastructure, $15 million for feeding athletes, and $48 million for operational costs, which the Local Organising Committee has defended.
Several groups, including the Forum for Accountable Governance, have called for an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into the financial outlay.
Speaking at the Accra Sports Stadium, Adams assured the public that a parliamentary probe would be carried out. He noted that although previous concerns were raised in Parliament, the report from the committee investigating the issue could not be considered before the 8th Parliament ended its term.
“With the return of the 9th Parliament, we will explore what can be done with the report. Whether it will be retabled or referred back to the committee for further review, we will follow due process and determine the next steps,” Adams said.
He further stated that no options would be ruled out and that the process would be transparent. Adams will officially assume office if Parliament approves his nomination.
