Kofi Adams, the Minister Designate for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has committed to prioritising the development of all sports in Ghana, not just football.
Speaking ahead of his confirmation hearing, Adams, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, acknowledged the significance of the Black Stars and football to Ghanaians but emphasized that other sporting disciplines also deserve attention and support. His comments come amidst concerns that previous administrations have focused disproportionately on the Black Stars while neglecting other national teams.
“Sports is not football; sports is not just the Black Stars,” Adams said in an interview on GHOne TV. “Sports goes beyond football, and football should go beyond the Black Stars. Of course, the Black Stars are important, but we want to see success across all sporting federations.”
Adams added that each sports federation, from the Black Stars to Badminton and the Black Queens, should receive equal attention and support from the Ministry of Sports. “As a sports minister, you are responsible for all of these federations,” he stated, promising to provide the necessary leadership and resources to ensure the success of all sporting disciplines.
While Adams pledged to foster the growth of various sports, he also stressed that football, as the nation’s favourite sport, would continue to receive the attention it deserves. “Football is the nation’s love, so you don’t reduce your attention on what the nation loves, but you develop all other sports because everything must be developed holistically,” he said.
Adams is set to replace Mustafa Ussif, who served as Sports Minister under the previous administration. He will undergo a vetting process before his confirmation.
