Kufuor Urges Speaker Bagbin to Show Leadership Amid Ghana Parliament Stand-off

Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to demonstrate decisive leadership to address the escalating stand-off in Parliament over seating arrangements.

The dispute stems from a recent Supreme Court decision to temporarily halt Bagbin’s earlier ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant. Bagbin’s ruling had effectively shifted the balance of power towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), allowing them to claim a parliamentary majority. Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have since challenged this, sparking ongoing tension within the chamber.

Despite the court’s intervention, NDC MPs have continued to assert their majority status, taking seats traditionally reserved for the NPP. This move has been met with resistance from NPP members, who have chosen not to enter the chamber to avoid potential clashes.

In a recent interview with Asempa FM, Mr. Kufuor described the situation as “embarrassing,” warning that the impasse could tarnish Bagbin’s career if not resolved promptly. He emphasised the Speaker’s responsibility to maintain order and stability within the House.

“I urge the Speaker of Parliament to step up and show leadership. What’s happening in Parliament is embarrassing, and it risks damaging his distinguished record,” Kufuor said.

As the parliamentary deadlock continues, there are growing calls for a resolution to preserve the integrity and functionality of Ghana’s legislative body.
