In the coming days, President John Dramani Mahama will address the nation in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) since assuming office, following the formation of his Cabinet on Thursday, February 20.
The highly anticipated speech, required by Article 67 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, will offer an in-depth look at the country’s economic challenges and outline the government’s plans for national development.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister of State for government communications, confirmed that Mahama will deliver the address soon, although the exact date has not been specified.
The Cabinet meeting, which preceded the announcement, covered a range of important issues, including national security, the economy, and the government’s new 24-hour economy initiative.
Security ministers reassured Cabinet members that Ghana remains secure, despite growing threats. Key figures such as the Defense Minister, Interior Minister, and National Security Coordinator updated officials on the country’s preparedness to face potential risks, emphasizing that stability is a top priority for the Mahama administration.
One of the standout topics discussed was the 24-hour economy initiative, designed to stimulate economic growth through round-the-clock business activity. Goosie Tanoh, the Presidential Adviser on the initiative, shared positive progress reports, announcing that preparations for the rollout were moving forward, with a formal roadmap to be presented to the public soon.
Meanwhile, the Finance Minister offered a sobering evaluation of Ghana’s economic situation, admitting that the financial outlook is even worse than initially expected during the election period. However, despite the bleak financial reality, the government remains confident in its strategies for economic recovery and revival.
