Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and Suame MP, has opened up about the internal dynamics that led to his resignation, making way for Alexander Afenyo-Markin to take over the role.
In a candid interview on Asempa FM on Tuesday, March 4, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that he had been forewarned by colleagues—about 80 MPs—regarding President Akufo-Addo’s plan to remove him from his position. While many MPs encouraged him to fight back, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu chose to step down, aiming to prevent any further division within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“I didn’t want to be the eye of any storm in the party,” he explained. “I felt I had had enough so I decided to resign.”
The former Majority Leader recounted an emergency meeting with President Akufo-Addo, where the president expressed concerns about the NPP’s declining influence in the Central Region, particularly with the growing strength of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Akufo-Addo saw Afenyo-Markin, who hails from the Central Region, as the best candidate to help the NPP regain its footing in the area, where NDC support was growing.
Although many MPs disagreed with the president’s reasoning, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu opted to step aside, putting party unity over personal ambition. “Rather than make things more complicated, I stepped aside,” he said.
