Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a Special Aide to Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has vowed that the incoming government will prioritise the recovery of over $58 million allegedly misused in the controversial National Cathedral project.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 10, Mogtari outlined the new administration’s commitment to fiscal accountability. The National Cathedral, a project launched by the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, has been marred by delays, public outcry, and accusations of financial mismanagement.
Mogtari questioned the justification for spending $58 million on the project, noting that there has been little visible progress to show for the expenditure.
“The $58 million spent on the National Cathedral is highly questionable,” she said. “We want to understand where the money went and who benefited from it. It’s difficult to see any tangible results from that investment.”
The incoming administration, she added, will initiate a full audit and investigation to uncover any financial irregularities and hold those responsible accountable. Mogtari stressed that the focus should now be on recovering the funds and ensuring they are put to better use.
