President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to launch an investigation into the controversial National Cathedral project, suggesting that the location could be reconsidered if the project moves forward.
Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Sunday, January 12, 2025, Mahama emphasised his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We will soon activate an investigation into the National Cathedral project,” Mahama told attendees. He added that if the project is to continue, the current site could be relocated. “I believe we can reach a more reasonable figure for completing such a project, and together we can raise the necessary funds,” he said, alluding to the possibility of reconsidering both the project’s cost and location.
The president left the final decision on the project’s future to consultations with religious leaders, stating, “I leave the rest to any such future consultation that we will have as the body of Christ.”
Mahama also indicated that a review of the project’s cost would be necessary to ensure its completion is feasible within a more reasonable budget.
In his speech, the former president reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption during his administration. “We will fight corruption relentlessly,” he declared, stressing the importance of justice in governance.
Reflecting on his electoral victory, Mahama expressed gratitude to the clergy and the Ghanaian people for their support. “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our sight,” he said, vowing to govern as a leader for all Ghanaians.
On policy priorities, Mahama outlined his plans to tackle unemployment, improve healthcare, and complete unfinished health facilities. “We will uncap the National Health Insurance Levy and operationalise all health facilities,” he added.
