President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, marking a significant leadership shake-up at one of Ghana’s premier health institutions.
The decision, formalized in a presidential statement dated April 30 and signed by Secretary to the President Callistus Mahama, follows the dismissal of Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, who had served in the role since 2023. Dr. Baidoo’s nomination is now subject to ratification under the provisions of Ghana’s Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525), as amended.

The leadership change has drawn mixed reactions, particularly among youth groups in the Ashanti Region, some of whom have publicly called for Prof. Addai-Mensah’s reinstatement. Analysts suggest the move could further strain relations between the central government and regional stakeholders ahead of the 2026 general elections.
No official reason was given for Prof. Addai-Mensah’s removal. A spokesperson for the Office of the President declined to comment on internal deliberations but confirmed that the administration is “committed to ensuring competent leadership at key national institutions.”
Dr. Baidoo, a veteran health administrator and senior physician, has held various roles within Ghana’s public health system and is widely regarded for his work in hospital management and medical policy.
