President John Mahama has appointed Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the current Minister for the Interior, to take on the additional responsibility of overseeing national security affairs.
The announcement, made in a letter to Parliament on March 7, 2025, marks a strategic shift in the country’s security framework.
The decision follows provisions outlined in the Securities and Intelligence Act, 2020 (Act 1030), which grants the President the authority to designate ministers to oversee national security matters. In his communication to lawmakers, President Mahama confirmed that Mubarak would now hold dual responsibilities, overseeing both the Interior Ministry and national security matters.
This new arrangement is aimed at fostering greater collaboration between the Interior Ministry and national security agencies, streamlining the country’s approach to emerging security challenges. The move is seen as an effort to integrate the nation’s security apparatus more effectively, promoting a coordinated and comprehensive response to threats.
