President John Dramani Mahama has implemented a ban on first-class travel for government appointees, a move aimed at reducing government spending and promoting fiscal responsibility.
During a ministerial swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025, President Mahama outlined the new policy, emphasizing that his administration would prioritize modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people.
The president instructed the Chief of Staff to formally communicate the ban to ministers and other appointees, making it clear that only essential travel would be approved. “Any travel deemed essential and necessary must first be cleared with the Office of the Chief of Staff, and such travels must be taken in modesty—no first class,” Mahama stated.
The president further stressed that his administration would not tolerate displays of excess or arrogance. “The resources you will be working with belong to the Ghanaian people who put us in office,” he said, urging ministers to be mindful of their duty to manage public funds responsibly.
This directive is part of Mahama’s broader efforts to ensure fiscal discipline and reduce unnecessary government expenditures during his administration.
