At Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration at Jubilee House, President John Mahama called on citizens to honor the sacrifices of their forebears while charting a path toward national progress and accountability.
Reflecting on Ghana’s history, Mahama paid tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s founding father, who envisioned an industrialized and self-reliant Ghana. However, he lamented that this vision was shattered by the CIA-backed coup of February 24, 1966, which he described as “the most regrettable and darkest moment in our nation’s history.” He noted that this event plunged Ghana into decades of instability, setting back national development.
Despite these setbacks, Mahama emphasized that Ghana has emerged as a fully-fledged democracy. However, he urged citizens to recognize that democracy is not just about elections but about accountability, safeguarding freedoms, and demanding socio-economic prosperity as promised in the country’s founding documents.
