Ghana’s former president and current National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has criticised New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his recent pledge to address youth unemployment if elected in December’s presidential election.

During a rally in Kwamikrom, in the Biakoye constituency of the Oti Region, Mr Mahama questioned Dr Bawumia’s credibility on job creation, citing the government’s unpaid allowances to former Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees. NABCO, established by the NPP government in 2018, was intended to address graduate unemployment by offering temporary job placements with the promise of long-term employment.

Mr Mahama highlighted that, despite assurances, many former trainees remain unpaid for several months. He argued that Dr Bawumia should focus on clearing these arrears if he is serious about supporting young Ghanaians.

“The NPP promised NABCO trainees jobs after completion, yet three years later, that commitment remains unfulfilled. Even the allowances promised to them during training have gone unpaid,” he said. “If Dr Bawumia truly intends to create jobs for the youth, he should begin by addressing the current issues facing NABCO trainees.”

The unpaid allowances and lack of job placements have become a focal point of discontent among NABCO beneficiaries, with many expressing frustration over the government’s unfulfilled promises.
