President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the recent killing of a military officer in Bawku and the subsequent military retaliation that resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children.
Visiting the Upper East Region on Thursday, 20 March 2025, as part of his “Thank You Tour,” Mahama expressed his disapproval of the violence, urging calm on all sides.
“I strongly condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku. Our military personnel are peacekeepers, sent to protect lives and property in conflict zones. It is unacceptable for them to become targets,” Mahama said. “Equally, I condemn the excessive use of force by our security forces, which led to the injury of innocent civilians.”
He acknowledged the anger over the death of the soldier but stressed the need for restraint, calling for better intelligence gathering to identify the perpetrators and ensure justice.
“I extend my condolences to the family of the fallen soldier and sympathies to all those affected by the military’s response,” he added.
The President also highlighted the importance of unity and development in the region, asserting that the progress of Ghana depends on collective efforts. He praised the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his role in mediating the Bawku conflict and urged all parties involved to cooperate with his efforts towards peace.
Mr. Mahama’s comments come amid ongoing tensions in Bawku, where clashes between ethnic groups have resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
