President John Dramani Mahama has defended the recent scrapping of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy), calling it a strategic step to foster greater digital financial inclusion in Ghana.

The E-levy, which had imposed a 1% tax on digital transactions, was officially repealed on April 2, 2025. While the decision has sparked debate—particularly among critics who argue that the levy was an important revenue source for the government—Mahama emphasized the long-term benefits for the country’s digital economy.

Speaking at the Czech-Ghana Business Cooperation Seminar on April 8, Mr. Mahama highlighted Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation, stating that the move to abolish the levy would make digital financial services more accessible and inclusive.

“In financial and digital services, Ghana is undergoing a rapid transformation. The repeal of the E-levy, along with other tax reductions, will promote further growth and inclusion in digital finance,” Mahama said.
