President John Dramani Mahama has engaged with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to discuss long-standing issues in Ghana’s energy sector, focusing on the financial sustainability of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the overall power distribution framework.
The meeting, held at the President’s office, marks the beginning of what Mahama described as a new approach to energy governance in the country.
In his remarks, President Mahama highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms, pointing to inefficiencies, procurement irregularities, and significant revenue losses at ECG. He also revisited previous efforts to introduce private sector involvement in electricity distribution, notably referencing the controversial Power Distribution Services (PDS) deal, which was terminated under the prior administration.
“If you’re facing 40% commercial and technical losses and still think you have a viable business, something has to change,” Mahama said, stressing the urgency of addressing the sector’s challenges.
