John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for inaugurating several interchanges just weeks before the December 7 elections, despite previously accusing Mahama of using similar infrastructure projects for political gain.
Mahama highlighted a 2016 social media post by NPP member Gabby Otchere-Darko, who had urged voters to focus on the economy, rather than infrastructure projects aimed at winning political support. Otchere-Darko had argued that addressing economic challenges should be the priority, a stance Mahama now sees as contradictory to the NPP’s recent actions.
The remarks came after President Akufo-Addo launched several road projects, including the Flowerpot Interchange and Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II, in the lead-up to the election.
During a campaign stop in Bawaleshie, as part of his Greater Accra tour, Mahama expressed frustration at the NPP’s shift in focus, suggesting that the criticisms of his administration’s infrastructure development had now backfired.
“How correct are his words from eight years ago?” Mahama said, urging voters not to be distracted by the interchanges. “This election is about change, not interchanges. It’s about unemployment, economic hardship, and incompetent leadership.”
Mahama continued, accusing the NPP administration of failing to improve the lives of Ghanaians, stating that in eight years, the current government has “taken Ghana 10 years backwards.”
