President John Mahama has announced plans to implement a comprehensive code of conduct for all government officials, aiming to promote accountability and curb excess in his administration. The move comes as part of broader efforts to ensure responsible governance and transparency.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed ministers on February 7, 2025, Mahama stressed that his government would not tolerate arrogance, excessive spending, or the misuse of public resources. “The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the people of Ghana. There will be no room for extravagance or arrogance,” he declared.
To further reduce government expenditure, Mahama introduced a ban on non-essential travel for government officials, mandating that any necessary trips be approved by the Chief of Staff and carried out with a focus on modesty. “No first-class air travel will be permitted, and displays of wealth and luxury will be avoided,” he emphasized.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to combatting corruption, stating that the forthcoming code of conduct would clearly define the boundaries of acceptable behavior for government officials. Additionally, Mahama announced that he would soon receive a report from the committee overseeing Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) on February 10.
“We must not only hold previous officials accountable but also take proactive steps to prevent corruption from taking root,” he added.
In closing, Mahama urged his ministers to serve with integrity, stressing that their primary responsibility was to improve the lives of Ghanaians rather than enrich themselves. “Our mission is to ensure the fair distribution of prosperity to all citizens,” he concluded.
