President John Mahama has announced his intention to restore July 1 as a statutory public holiday, reviving its importance as both Republic Day and Senior Citizens Day in Ghana.
During his Thank You tour of the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5, Mahama revealed plans for the day to be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. He emphasized that this day would provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s progress and express gratitude to God, referencing the Bible’s call to “give thanks in all things.”
“We will soon have the chance as a nation to pray and give thanks to the Almighty,” Mahama stated.
To ensure the event is properly coordinated, the president also announced plans to appoint a committee of religious leaders to manage the observance.
In addition, Mahama confirmed that amendments to the Public Holidays Act will be submitted to Parliament, paving the way for July 1 to officially return as a public holiday.
“We are moving forward with amendments to the Republic Holidays Act that will restore July 1 as a holiday,” he said.
Mahama also reiterated his commitment to the Muslim community, confirming that provisions for an additional holiday to mark Eid-ul-Fitr would be included in the forthcoming amendments.
