President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s security agencies to take swift and decisive action to address rising incidents of lawlessness following the December 7 general elections.
Mahama’s comments came after reports of alleged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) storming several state agencies, ransacking offices, and causing significant disruptions.
In a national address on Tuesday, December 10, Mahama condemned the acts of vandalism and unrest, urging for an immediate halt to attacks on state offices and installations. “These actions are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” he said, calling on both the president and the security forces to restore law and order swiftly.
He appealed for calm, urging all citizens to respect the rule of law during the critical transition period. “While it’s unclear who is behind these attacks, I condemn them in no uncertain terms,” Mahama added.
The former president also emphasised the need for constructive responses to political frustration. “I urge the youth not to channel their anger into criminal acts. Instead, they must focus on rebuilding our nation,” he said.
Mahama stressed the importance of unity in rebuilding Ghana and reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful efforts. “State power remains in the hands of the current administration, and now is the time to demonstrate our unity in rebuilding the Ghana we all desire,” he concluded.
He reiterated his call for prompt action from both the president and security agencies to address the ongoing unrest and restore stability.
