Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in  Parliament, has rejected the Minority’s proposal to subject two ministerial nominees—Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Samuel Nartey George—to secret voting for approval.

On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called for secret voting after claiming that the nominees for the positions of Foreign Affairs and Communications Ministers, respectively, had failed to submit promised documents to the Appointments Committee. Afenyo-Markin argued that without these documents, the nominees should not be approved.

“We will take Ablakwa and Sam George through secret voting,” Afenyo-Markin stated on the House floor.

In response, Ayariga firmly disagreed, highlighting that both nominees were approved by consensus during the Committee’s deliberations. “The committee approved them by consensus, so no nominees will be singled out. I will not accept it. The decision made by the committee is final,” Ayariga stated.

The disagreement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the vetting process, with the Majority Leader insisting that the decisions made by the Appointments Committee should stand as they were.
