Ghana Armed Forces personnel successfully thwarted an attempted takeover of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) headquarters on Tuesday, December 10, preventing a major disruption to the operations of one of the country’s key economic institutions.

The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, shows a crowd of unidentified individuals attempting to breach the gates of the GPHA headquarters. Military personnel stationed at the site quickly intervened, preventing the intruders from gaining access and restoring order.

The takeover attempt began earlier in the day when a group of men gathered at the entrance to the GPHA building. Witnesses reported that the crowd, numbering in the dozens, displayed aggressive behaviour and tried to force their way onto the premises.

Military forces formed a barrier and used measured force to push back the crowd. Tense moments were captured on footage as the situation unfolded, but the incident was eventually brought under control without any reports of injuries or significant damage.

This attempted takeover adds to a growing series of similar incidents targeting government institutions across the country since John Dramani Mahama was declared president-elect. Other facilities, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Forestry Commission, and Metro Mass Transit, have also been targeted by groups seeking to seize control of these institutions.
