A military officer from Ghana’s 11 Mechanised Battalion was shot and killed by gunmen in Bawku on Monday, March 17, 2025. The officer, who had reportedly left his station without his uniform, was ambushed by attackers in the Kpalore-Avengo area of the town.

The killing adds to the rising toll of violence in Bawku, where tensions have remained high since the conflict reignited in October 2024. Local residents have been living in self-imposed isolation, with many limiting movement based on their neighborhoods to avoid conflict-related dangers.

The ongoing violence has claimed the lives of at least 75 individuals, including women and children, as security forces continue to struggle with instability in the region. Authorities have yet to identify the gunmen or clarify the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, though investigations are underway.
