Laadi Ayii Ayamba, Member of Parliament for Pusiga, has recounted a troubling incident during the ministerial vetting process on January 30, in which Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on committee clerk, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah.
Testifying before an investigative committee, Ayamba said the confrontation began as soon as the Minority entered the session. “What I witnessed was a direct attack by the Minority Leader on the clerk, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, without any provocation,” Ayamba stated, adding that the aggressive behavior made her uncomfortable.
As the situation unfolded, the committee chairman instructed Jiagge-Gobah to administer the oath to the nominee—a task she had already completed. Ayamba noted that the Minority Leader’s attack prevented the clerk from proceeding with her duties.
In response, Ayamba took it upon herself to encourage Jiagge-Gobah to follow the chairman’s instructions. “You are supposed to listen to the chairman, not anyone else,” Ayamba said, urging the clerk to proceed.
The confrontation intensified when some Minority members directed personal attacks at Jiagge-Gobah, questioning her political affiliations and making disrespectful comments. Ayamba, visibly upset, confronted Afenyo-Markin, saying, “She is a dignified woman, and with that, she doesn’t have to be spoken to in that way. Please, can you stop?”
Ayamba explained that, as a woman, she felt compelled to stand up for Jiagge-Gobah. “I could not just sit there and allow this to happen. She deserves respect, and I could not let such behavior go unchecked,” Ayamba concluded.
