Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed that 107 foreigners have been deported since he took office as part of the government’s intensified efforts to tackle illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
In a recent media briefing, Mr. Muntaka reiterated the government’s commitment to curbing the destructive effects of illegal mining, which have severely impacted the country’s environment and economy. He emphasized that deportations were just one part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing the illegal practice, which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s water bodies and farmlands.
Alongside deportations, Mr. Muntaka announced that he had ordered the immediate transfer of all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas. “These commanders have been in these regions for too long, and illegal mining continues to thrive,” Mr. Muntaka said. “We need new faces and fresh approaches to tackle this persistent issue.”
The Minister made it clear that the government would continue to ramp up its efforts, with further measures on the horizon to protect the country’s natural resources. “We are resolute in our fight against galamsey and will not relent until we see real results,” he stated.
