The Special Prosecutor has warned of severe security threats linked to his role, stating that his personal risk is “ultra high” due to the nature of his work in tackling corruption.

Speaking at the Constitution Day Public Lecture, the Special Prosecutor described the dangers faced by both himself and his team in their ongoing efforts to combat corruption, calling the position a “thankless” job that often leads to hostile confrontations.

He explained, “The position of Special Prosecutor fetches you droves of enemies daily and brings you into direct confrontation with the lowest forms of debasement in humans. You do not go asking for it; it finds you.”

While the public broadly supports the fight against corruption, he noted the paradox faced by his office: “Everyone wants the Special Prosecutor to do his job, yet no one wants the Special Prosecutor to do his job. It all depends on the subject of the investigation.”

The Special Prosecutor acknowledged that despite widespread support for anti-corruption measures, resistance emerges when specific individuals or groups are scrutinised. He stressed the intense backlash his office faces, including attacks, smear campaigns, and attempts to discredit the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

However, the most alarming aspect of the job, he said, is the escalating threat to personal safety. “Some of the enemies this job attracts will not hesitate to take a life should the opportunity present itself,” he warned, adding that both he and his officers live under constant threat.

He went on to explain that the security risks involved are ever-present, stating, “My security risk is ultra high, and I have to perpetually be on the lookout for attacks on my person.”

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is currently investigating several high-profile corruption cases, including inquiries into the National Cathedral project and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML).
