In the wake of the devastating fire that ravaged the Adum Bluelight market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stepped up to assist affected traders. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the NPP’s running mate for the 2024 elections, visited the site on March 2, 2024, to offer his condolences and pledge support for the rebuilding efforts.

The fire, which struck in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025, destroyed large sections of the market, leaving traders in distress. Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who served as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, donated GH₵50,000 and 500 bags of cement to help restore the market. He also confirmed that an additional GH₵100,000 would be allocated from his constituency’s Common Fund for reconstruction purposes.

During his visit, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized the importance of unity among the traders as they work together to rebuild. “It is crucial that you remain united in your efforts. Division will only hinder progress,” he urged. He also expressed personal empathy, noting the emotional toll such an event takes. “I know what it feels like to be affected by fire; it is only through this experience that one can truly understand the pain,” he remarked.

He further recognized the support already offered by other political figures, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Regional Minister Kennedy Agyapong, and former President John Mahama. “If I didn’t come, it would not have been fair to you,” he added.

Additionally, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the current Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, contributed to the reconstruction effort by donating 100 bags of cement.

The community’s resilience, coupled with political and public support, aims to restore the market and provide stability to the affected traders.
