The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s Awutu Senya East constituency is urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to deploy additional security forces to the area ahead of the upcoming elections to prevent a recurrence of violence seen during the 2020 polls.
Violence erupted at the Steps to Christ Registration Centre during the 2020 elections when armed individuals fired into a crowd, injuring one person with gunshot wounds. The NDC Youth Organiser for the constituency, Nash Nyande Adams, said the party has gathered intelligence indicating that some individuals linked to the 2020 violence have resurfaced in the area in the days leading up to the election. He warned that the risk of similar chaos is high unless proactive security measures are implemented.
“We have received intelligence that individuals involved in the gunfire incident at the Steps to Christ Centre in 2020 are back in the constituency. We want the IGP to act swiftly to prevent a repeat of that incident,” Adams said, calling for urgent action.
He also urged the IGP to ensure that law enforcement agencies maintain vigilance at polling stations and protect the integrity of the electoral process. Adams emphasised the need for transparent vote counting and the prevention of any interference.
The Youth Organiser further raised concerns about the ongoing destruction of NDC billboards and posters by unknown individuals, which he claimed has been reported to the police without any arrests. He urged the IGP to deploy a dedicated task force to investigate and arrest those responsible.
“Failure to act will embolden these individuals to continue. As the NDC in Awutu Senya East, we will not tolerate this impunity,” Adams added.
The party has made it clear that it is prepared to take action to ensure the safety and rights of its members and voters, but insists that the police must take the lead in securing the area.
