The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned remarks made by Dela Edem, a member of its National Communications Team, about former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In a viral video, Mr Edem was seen making disparaging comments about the former leader, prompting swift backlash and an official response from the party.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 17 November, and signed by Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC described the remarks as “unsavoury and distasteful” and emphasised that the party does not tolerate disrespect towards senior statesmen, regardless of their political affiliations.

The party joined Mr Edem in issuing an apology to Mr Kufuor, acknowledging the inappropriate nature of the comments. The statement also praised Mr Kufuor’s significant contributions to Ghana’s development during his tenure as President from 2001 to 2009.

“The NDC adds its voice to the apology that has been rendered and hopes that this retraction and apology brings closure to the matter,” the statement read.

The party further reiterated its commitment to fostering respectful political discourse, urging members to exercise decorum, particularly when addressing past national leaders.

Mr Edem has since retracted his comments and issued an unqualified apology to Mr Kufuor.
