Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, has strongly rebutted claims that the current administration under President John Mahama has appointed an excessive number of ministers and staffers.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet meeting press briefing, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu pushed back against what he described as “false narratives” about a bloated government, emphasizing that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is set to be the smallest in Ghana’s history.
“Let the records be set straight,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted. “Any claim that President Mahama has appointed 100 ministers and is hiding some in the presidency is blatantly false.”
He clarified that the current number of ministers stands at 56, a far cry from the much larger numbers seen in previous administrations. In a comparison that underscored the NDC’s fiscal restraint, he also highlighted that the number of presidential staffers has dropped dramatically.
“Currently, there are just 30 individuals serving as presidential staffers and aides — a sharp contrast to the 336 political appointees under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration in 2022,” he said. This, he argued, reflected the administration’s commitment to efficiency and cost-saving measures.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu pointed out that in 2017, the NPP had 27 staffers and 256 political appointees, which ballooned to 336 by 2022. He argued that this reduction in government size will lead to substantial savings, especially in terms of vehicle purchases and other operational expenses.
Despite claims from opposition figures about a bloated government, Mr.Kwakye Ofosu urged Ghanaians to focus on the facts, assuring them that President Mahama remains steadfast in his commitment to a lean, fiscally responsible government.
