The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus has urged the Speaker of Parliament to dismiss the request by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for their recall. The NDC’s appeal comes amid growing political tensions, as the NPP seeks to challenge recent decisions made within the legislature.
However, the decision to reconvene Parliament has sparked controversy. The Minority Caucus, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has opposed the recall in a memo issued on November 25, questioning the necessity of the move. The political standoff reflects ongoing tensions within the legislative body as it prepares to resume its work.
The Minority described the recall request as “ill-fated and ill-timed,” arguing that if granted, Members of Parliament would be forced to cut short crucial engagements with their constituents. Additionally, MPs would face significant logistical challenges, including long-distance travel and access difficulties to reach Accra from their often remote constituencies.
The Minority also questioned the urgency of the recall, pointing out that the Majority Caucus, which initiated the petition, has failed to present any compelling national emergency or critical government business that would justify such an action.
