A new locally developed ride-hailing app, GoRide, has launched in Accra, aiming to connect passengers and drivers with a nod to Ghana’s traditional transport system. The platform was officially introduced by Ghana’s Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at a ceremony at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) conference hall.

GoRide differentiates itself from other ride-hailing apps by offering a lower commission rate of 10 percent for drivers, compared to the typical 20 percent seen on similar platforms. The reduced rate is expected to ease financial pressures on drivers, many of whom struggle under higher commission rates that cut into their earnings.

Dr Bawumia described GoRide as a “revolutionary” public-private initiative intended to transform the country’s transport sector. He highlighted the app as a symbol of local empowerment and innovation, reflecting the government’s commitment to using technology to foster inclusive development.

“This isn’t just an app,” Dr Bawumia said. “GoRide represents a bold step to elevate the trade of our local drivers, particularly those linked to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). With a competitive commission rate of 10 percent, our drivers can retain more of their earnings, improving their financial stability and supporting their families. This is about restoring dignity to our drivers and helping them thrive.”

GoRide aims to preserve the essence of Ghana’s traditional taxi system while modernizing the process of connecting passengers and drivers. This launch marks a milestone in Ghana’s journey toward a more equitable and prosperous transport system.
