The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition,National Democratic Congress (NDC) of recruiting and training individuals to disrupt December’s general elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, alleged that the NDC was secretly preparing groups under the guise of private security training to destabilise the electoral process in the NPP stronghold.
“Information available to the NPP indicates that for months, the NDC has been training thugs in several communities, including the Obuasi East Constituency. Their intention is to disrupt the elections in the Ashanti Region,” he claimed.
Mr. Boakye also pointed to a recent meeting on November 11, allegedly organised by the NDC’s committee on mining. According to him, the meeting, held at the Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West Municipality and chaired by former Minerals Commission CEO Tony Aubynn, aimed to recruit small-scale miners sympathetic to the NDC into a vigilante group called the Eagle Force. This group, he alleged, would be deployed to create chaos at polling stations in NPP strongholds.
The NPP, however, dismissed accusations from the NDC that it is working with Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to rig the elections in the Ashanti Region.
“These allegations are baseless and lack any credible evidence,” Mr. Boakye said. “They are a desperate attempt by the NDC to stir tension and divert attention from their own actions.”
The accusations come amid heightened political tensions as the December polls draw closer, with both major parties trading allegations of misconduct and foul play.
