The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred former Dome-Kwabenya lawmaker Sarah Adwoa Safo to its disciplinary committee, accusing her of violating a party directive prohibiting members from discussing internal matters publicly.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a statement on the matter, asserting that Adwoa Safo’s recent comments on the Pulse Show of Joy News were in clear violation of the directive, which mandates that members refrain from publicly addressing issues that could create division or unrest within the party.
Madam Safo’s remarks, particularly her criticism of the NPP’s internal committee investigating the party’s electoral losses, were deemed by the party as disruptive. She described the committee as “bogus” and cautioned against blaming the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the party’s setbacks.
In an interview on March 20, Adwoa Safo also declared she would not seek re-election as the member of parliament for Dome-Kwabenya. Despite her years of service and perceived sacrifices in the constituency, she expressed disillusionment with how she had been treated and made it clear she would not return for another term. “I won’t. It will take my father to change my mind,” she remarked, adding, “I’ve done 12 years, and I’ve left a good legacy in the constituency.”
Furthermore, Miss Safo alluded to future ambitions beyond parliament, hinting at aspirations for higher political office, including a potential run for the speakership of parliament or other significant roles. She also suggested that the NPP would likely field Bawumia in the 2028 election cycle.
Mr.Frimpong’s statement emphasized that Adwoa Safo’s actions contradicted the principles of discipline, loyalty, and unity outlined in the party’s constitution. He noted that as a former MP, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister, Safo was expected to adhere to the party’s internal policies. The General Secretary confirmed that Safo’s actions would now be reviewed by the party’s National Disciplinary Committee for further action.
