The National Youth Organizer for Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha has issued a public apology and retraction of claims made against Professor Ransford Gyampo, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana.
In a statement released on October 28, Mustapha had accused Prof. Gyampo of exploiting a recent University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike to influence students politically on behalf of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). He also alleged that Gyampo was seeking a potential political appointment from the NDC and made unsubstantiated claims regarding his personal conduct, including accusations of misconduct with students.
Following consultations with Prof. Gyampo’s legal team, Mustapha acknowledged the allegations were defamatory and without evidence. In response, he issued a formal apology, saying, “Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof. Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him.”
Mustapha committed to ensuring his retraction would be given equal prominence across media outlets that had reported his original claims. “I am causing this retraction and apology to be published and be given the same prominence by all the media outlets that carried the contents of my Press Statement,” he stated.
The incident highlights the increasingly polarized political landscape in Ghana and underscores the risks of unverified allegations in public discourse.
