Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has stressed the need for an urgent overhaul of the Komenda Sugar Factory, which has remained inactive due to a shortage of raw materials.
Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, Ofosu-Adjare outlined the factory’s challenges, including a lack of necessary components, which have prevented it from becoming fully operational. She described the factory’s revival as crucial to reducing Ghana’s reliance on sugar imports.
The minister-designate said she would collaborate with relevant government bodies to assess the factory’s current state and develop a plan for its revitalization. While acknowledging that previous funds had been allocated to address the issues, she highlighted the importance of a comprehensive evaluation to determine the factory’s readiness for operation.
“We need the factory to function for the benefit of Ghanaians,” Ofosu-Adjare stated, noting that the country imports sugar worth around half a million dollars annually. “Once I assume office, I will ensure that we assess the factory’s health and take the necessary steps to make it operational.”
The Komenda Sugar Factory, established to help meet domestic demand, has long faced challenges in production, and its revival is seen as key to reducing sugar imports and boosting local industry.
