Military engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces have conducted an assessment of the dangerous route that schoolchildren in the Asuokow community, Eastern Region, must navigate daily. The children are forced to cross a perilous water body to reach their school, a situation that has raised serious concerns following a viral video.
The visit comes in response to an urgent directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who was prompted by the video to take action.
In a Facebook post on Monday, February 10, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah assured the public that the government is committed to resolving the issue. “Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces have already visited the Asuokow community, where young schoolchildren must cross this water body to access school,” he stated.
Dr. Omane Boamah also underscored that the government is focused on ensuring the safety of the children and the wider community, noting that steps are underway to find a permanent solution. “As President Mahama has assured Ghanaians, we are working to urgently and permanently resolve the challenge facing the people and schoolchildren of Asuokow,” he added.
The visit by the military engineers marks the beginning of efforts to address the safety concerns and enhance access to education in the region, underscoring the government’s commitment to both protecting vulnerable communities and improving the educational infrastructure.
