The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has vowed to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in unlawful activities during Ghana’s 2024 general election.
In its mid-year report, the OSP revealed it has received numerous complaints about electoral offences, including vote-buying, vote-selling, and allegations of corruption, intimidation, and falsification of results. These complaints have been lodged by both political candidates and the public.
“The Office has been investigating cases of electoral malpractice, from internal party contests to the general elections,” the report stated. It added that the OSP remains committed to ensuring free and fair elections in the future, warning that electoral corruption undermines the integrity of the democratic process.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng reaffirmed the OSP’s determination to hold offenders accountable, saying: “We will engage with stakeholders to intensify efforts in eradicating electoral corruption in Ghana.”
The 2024 elections, held on December 7, were marred by disturbances, particularly involving party agents from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Some constituencies witnessed violent clashes and the destruction of election materials. Tragically, three people lost their lives amid the unrest, and delays occurred in the Electoral Commission’s ability to declare parliamentary results.
Post-election violence has continued, with reports of suspected NDC members forcing their way into public institutions, claiming that their party had won the election.
