Kwadwo Mpiani, a former Chief of Staff under President John Agyekum Kufuor, has advised Ghana’s Parliament to resolve its internal issues independently rather than turning to the judiciary for intervention.
His comments come in light of a recent move by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who approached the Supreme Court to contest Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. The Supreme Court later ruled in a 5-2 decision that Bagbin’s declaration was unconstitutional, with Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo stating that the Speaker’s actions could not stand.
The court’s decision has sparked renewed debate about the balance of power between the Majority and Minority in Parliament. Speaking on Joy FM on Wednesday, Mr Mpiani cautioned that frequent recourse to the courts could hamper parliamentary operations. He urged the legislative body to handle disputes through dialogue and consensus rather than litigation.
“I don’t personally believe that anybody should injunct Parliament because if you do that, you will make the work of Parliament more difficult. Next time, someone will run to court to injunct Parliament on how it does its work,” he said.
Mr Mpiani also called on Speaker Bagbin to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling and encouraged Members of Parliament to prioritise constructive discussions to maintain stability within the legislative body.
