Parliament has approved a GHS31 billion budget for the Ministry of Education for the 2025 fiscal year, outlining a series of initiatives aimed at improving access to education and enhancing teacher welfare.

As part of the new budget, the Ministry of Education will waive academic fees for all first-year students at public tertiary institutions to ease the financial burden on students and their families. The government also plans to introduce free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, further expanding educational opportunities for underserved groups.

In a bid to address teacher welfare, the Ministry will launch the “Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative,” which includes the construction of 100 accommodation facilities for basic school teachers.

The approval of the education budget follows a separate GHS4 billion allocation for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, also for 2025. These funds will be used to pay allowances for assembly members and traditional authorities, as well as to support various community-focused initiatives, including a proposed National Prayer Day.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Agbodza, addressed concerns in Parliament regarding the remuneration of assembly members, confirming that their compensation would be incorporated into the Common Fund formula currently under review.
