Parliament to begin vetting  deputy minister nominees today

The Appointments Committee of Ghana’s Parliament will commence public hearings today to vet President John Mahama’s nominees for deputy ministerial roles.

The hearings, scheduled to run from Monday, February 24 to Thursday, February 27, 2025, will begin at 9:30 a.m. daily in Committee Rooms 1 and 2 of the Administration Block.

President Mahama has nominated 13 deputy ministers, each tasked with supporting key sectors in advancing the nation’s development goals. Additionally, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba has been proposed as Minister of State for Public Sector Reforms.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential spokesperson, announced the nominees on February 5, describing them as individuals selected for their expertise, dedication, and alignment with the government’s vision. He added that the President is confident the nominees will inject fresh perspectives and renewed energy into their respective ministries.

Full List of Nominees:

  1. Ministry of Finance: Thomas Nyarko Ampem – To support Ghana’s fiscal policies amidst global economic challenges.
  2. Ministry of the Interior: Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi – Tasked with addressing national security and internal peace.
  3. Ministry of Defence: Ernest Brogya Gyenfi – To assist in strengthening the country’s defense systems.
  4. Ministry of Education: Clement Abas Apaak – To lead educational reforms and improve access to quality education.
  5. Ministry of Energy & Green Transition: Richard Gyan-Mensah – Focused on advancing clean energy initiatives.
  6. Ministry of Roads & Highways: Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini – To support critical infrastructure development.
  7. Ministry of Justice & Attorney General: Justice Srem-Sai – To assist in legal reforms and uphold the rule of law.
  8. Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources: Yusif Sulemana – Focused on sustainable land management and resource use.
  9. Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs: Rita Naa Odoley Sowah – To strengthen local governance structures.
  10. Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources: Gizella Tettey-Agbotui – To address housing shortages and improve water access.
  11. Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts: Yussif Issaka Jajah – Aimed at boosting tourism and preserving cultural heritage.
  12. Ministry of Food and Agriculture: John Kofi Setor Dumelo – To lead efforts in enhancing agricultural productivity and food security.
  13. Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry: Samson Ahi – Focused on driving industrial growth and trade expansion.

In addition, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba has been nominated as Minister of State for Public Sector Reforms, with a mandate to streamline government operations and enhance service delivery.

The vetting process is expected to attract considerable public attention, as Ghanaians await the nominees’ vision for their respective roles. Civil society organisations and political analysts have called for a rigorous evaluation based on integrity, competence, and dedication to national development.

Chairing the committee, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor has assured the public of a transparent and fair vetting process.
