The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a youthful and capable Minister for Food and Agriculture. The association emphasized the need for a nominee with a strong agricultural background and the expertise to tackle the sector’s challenges effectively.
In a statement congratulating Mahama after his inauguration, the group expressed its readiness to support smallholder farmers and foster agricultural development. “We respectfully request that you nominate a Minister who has the relevant experience, agricultural knowledge, and the ability to engage with all stakeholders in the value chain,” the statement read.
The PFAG voiced confidence that, under Mahama’s leadership, the agricultural sector and smallholder farmers would make significant strides.
Action Needed on Galamsey and Pwalugu Dam Audit
The association also urged Mahama to honor his commitment to combat illegal mining, particularly by enforcing bans on mining activities in forests, farmlands, and river bodies, and implementing a land reclamation plan for damaged areas.
Regarding the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam, the PFAG highlighted its potential to boost agricultural output by 20-30% if properly implemented. However, they criticized the previous administration for using the project as a means of extortion without accountability.
The group called for an audit of the dam as part of Mahama’s Operation Recover All Loot initiative, ensuring that any misused funds are recovered. Additionally, they urged the allocation of funds to begin construction of the dam within the first 120 days of Mahama’s new term.
