Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Ghana’s Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has committed to addressing the country’s labour challenges with a measured and collaborative approach. In his testimony before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, 30 January 2025, Pelpuo acknowledged the long-standing labour disputes in Ghana, including issues related to wages and working conditions, and stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts.
Pelpuo outlined his philosophy of conflict resolution, emphasising patience and emotional intelligence as key to overcoming disputes. “When both parties are angry, you can’t solve the problem. Somebody has to be quiet and thoughtful,” he explained.
Pelpuo also reaffirmed his support for the National Democratic Congress’s 24-hour economy policy, a major initiative aimed at creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. The policy, proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama, envisions a three-shift system that would enable industries to operate continuously throughout the day and night, extending economic activity beyond traditional working hours.
Should Pelpuo’s nomination be confirmed, he pledged to collaborate closely with labour unions, employers, and other stakeholders to ensure that labour disputes are resolved amicably and effectively.
