In the early hours of November 9, 2024, the Ghana Society of Perioperative Nurses, (GHASPON) Greater Accra Branch kicked off their Perioperative Week celebration with an invigorating health walk, setting the stage for a week focused on the dedication and resilience of perioperative nurses. The event, which started at 7:00 AM, gathered nurses from hospitals across the Greater Accra Region to promote health and unity within their ranks.
Under the watchful eye of police protection, the walk began at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. Participants traversed prominent city landmarks, including the Ridge Roundabout, National Theatre Road, and Ministry Traffic Lights, culminating at the serene beach behind the former National Media Commission. The gathering embraced the scenic walk as a refreshing shift from their daily routines in the high-stakes environment of the operating theatre.
Upon reaching the beach, attendees participated in a high-energy aerobics session led by a professional trainer from the Alisa Hotel Gym. This exercise provided not only physical benefits but also a sense of rejuvenation and stress relief. The participants then retraced their steps back to the hospital, completing a morning filled with fitness, fellowship, and motivation.
Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO) Rita Akoto, who oversees surgical care at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, highlighted the walk’s value to her team: “This health walk is a moment for us to break away from the pressures of the operating theatre, breathe fresh air, and recharge. As we approach Perioperative Week, taking care of our own health is just as critical as the care we provide to others,” she remarked.
By organizing this event, GHASPON not only underscored the physical and mental wellness of its members but also strengthened camaraderie, reminding nurses that teamwork and personal health are integral to their demanding profession. As they head into Perioperative Week, the nurses look forward to celebrating their invaluable contributions to healthcare with renewed energy and unity.
The health walk saw the participation of prominent figures, including Ms. Naana Akyaa Asante, Chairperson of the Nurses and Midwives Council Board, and Mrs. Vera Asimah Ackah, National Chairperson of GHASPON.
This inspiring health walk and celebration of perioperative nurses’ dedication promises to serve as a motivating example for the healthcare community across Ghana and beyond.
