A new 10,000-capacity stadium has officially opened in Hohoe, Volta Region, following years of development. The facility was commissioned by the area’s Member of Parliament, John-Peter Amewu, who also serves as Minister for Railways Development.

The Hohoe stadium project, initiated in 2005 when Amewu was the Municipal Chief Executive under the Kufuor administration, faced delays after the NPP’s exit from power in 2008. Work resumed in 2017, with funding provided by generous donations from various individuals. The completed stadium features a standard football pitch and a range of additional facilities.

At the commissioning ceremony on November 30, 2024, attended by football legend Abedi Ayew Pele and Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, Amewu highlighted the facility’s role in nurturing local football talent. He also expressed gratitude to the Chiefs and residents of Hohoe for their support throughout the project. “This is not the effort of one individual but of everyone, and the credit goes to the people of Hohoe for their enthusiasm for sports,” Amewu stated.

The new stadium is currently the home ground for Division One side Hohoe United, and the opening is expected to stimulate local business as teams and football fans visit regularly.

The ceremony also featured an exhibition match between a team of former Black Stars players, including John Paintsil, John Mensah, Agyemang Badu, Aminu Dramani, and Fatawu Dauda, and a Hohoe select side. The star-studded Black Stars team triumphed 4-1, drawing a large crowd of spectators to the newly opened venue.
