President-elect John Mahama has condemned the political class in Ghana for abusing the power entrusted to them by the electorate. Speaking at a thanksgiving service on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the Assemblies of God Ringway Gospel Centre in Accra, Mahama expressed concern that politicians, including himself, have grown increasingly arrogant and self-serving.
“We’ve practiced democracy since 1992, but over time, political elites, myself included, have become arrogant and selfish,” Mahama said. “We have forgotten that the power we wield is temporary and given to us by God, and it is the people who ultimately hold that power.”
Reflecting on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant loss in the 2024 elections, Mahama described it as a wake-up call for all politicians to remember that their authority comes from the people, who have the power to remove them if dissatisfied with their leadership.
“Just as the NPP is dealing with the consequences of their loss, this should serve as a lesson for us all,” he said. “The people have shown that power belongs to them, and they will remind us of it when necessary.”
Mahama also warned potential appointees to his administration that only those willing to serve with humility and dedication would be considered. “I have received numerous requests for positions, but I warn those who seek office: if you are not prepared to serve the people with humility, stay where you are,” he added.
