President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to prioritise security in Bawku and announced key appointments this week to address the ongoing conflict in the region. Speaking during his visit to Bawku on Tuesday, January 14, 2025—his first trip outside of Accra since his inauguration—Mahama stressed his commitment to bringing lasting peace to the area.

“We want to assure you that we are putting in place the various appointments so that we can have ministers and other officials responsible for security to take charge,” Mahama said in his address to the people of Bawku.

The president outlined the imminent appointments of key security figures, including the Minister of Defence, Minister of Interior, National Security Adviser, National Security Coordinator, and the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). He emphasised that once these appointments are finalised, they will focus on making Bawku a top priority.

“When these appointments are made, I’m going to charge them to make Bawku one of the number one priorities that they attend and deal with,” he said.

Mahama also called for patience and restraint from residents, assuring them that his government is fully aware of the challenges they face. “Trust in myself and this administration. I am apprised of the issues, and I’m going to deal with them. By the grace of God, peace will come back permanently,” he said.

As part of his efforts to foster dialogue and reconciliation, Mahama also announced plans to visit Nalerigu to meet with the Nayiri, the traditional ruler of the Mamprugu area, to further promote peace-building in the region.

The president’s visit reflects his administration’s determination to focus on security and reconciliation in conflict-affected areas, underlining his commitment to restoring stability across the country.
